Brochures or Pamphlets?

Read the following information and decide wether to design a pamphlet or a brochure.


A pamphlet is an unbound booklet consisting of five to 48 pages, often stapled at the crease. Any more pages, and conventional wisdom names this a book. A copywriter will create pamphlets that are used to shed light on subjects ranging from kitchen appliances to political treatises to medical warnings.

A brochure or flyer is a leaflet advertisement, usually succinct in composition and eye-catching in design. It is a popular medium for advertising new events, hotels, restaurants, launching products and services or providing directions and maps. Available in bi-fold, tri-fold, accordion or “Z-fold” and “C-fold” styles, brochures are often made from multiple folded sheets of high-quality, glossy paper with writing on each of the panels


The central difference between brochures and pamphlets is that the latter are usually non-commercial and present an argument to persuade readers towards one point of view (e.g. religious pamphlets). Brochures present a product or service for sale, and often emphasise design using colour, pictures and calls to action. Pamphlets don’t need to do this, and often don’t have the means to.

The appeal of both brochures and pamphlets is that they present information on a specific topic that answers readers’ pressing questions without taking up much of their time. Usually brochures copywriting is clever and eye-catching, while telling only part of the “story”; motivating readers to call a number, log in online, or visit their local branch to found out more. Creating Pamphlets

Make a research on the internet abput pamphlets and in a word document answer the follwing:

• What is a pamphlet?


• What are the main parts of a pamphlet?


• What kind of information does a regular pamphlet contain?


• Search on the internet for some common layouts for pamphlet designs.


• How is the information of a pamphlet arranged?

Identify the business for whom you are going to create a pamphlet for and answer the follwing:

• Describe the business.


• Who is the target audience? (describe it)


• What kind of products do they sell?


• What is the purpose of your pamphlet?


• What kind of information will your pamphlet contain?


• According to the color theory, what colors are you going to use and why? (purpose)


• What material does the company need to hand in to you?


• According to the principles and elements of design describe the layout of your pamphlet.


• Create the preliminar layout of your pamphlet.

Business Cards

• Search on the internet some examples of different styles and designs related to business cards.


• Choose one of the descriptions below, and design two different business cards proposals for them.


• Make sure to read carefully and make part of the design the description about them and the special notes or requests.


• The standard size for the business card is 9 x 5 cm


• Photoshop settings: document – 18 x 10 cm, resolution 300 ppi, color mode 16 bpp.

How to use Filters

Adobe Photoshop CS4 filters provide a range of options for changing your image's appearance. You can use filters to clean up or retouch your images, apply special art effects that give your image the appearance of a sketch or pastel painting, and apply distortions and lighting effects. These filters can create added interest or help you achieve design goals. As with many Photoshop featyres, though, you should take care not to overuse filters, as too many filters can make an image look busy or unproffesional.


Search 7 different pictures on the internet (scenery, houses, animals, etc.) Apply different filters to them, make shure to notice all the filters that photoshop offers you-

Use the liquify filter to distort or make a funny face.

This week you'll create a digital scrapbook page using Adobe Photoshop.

Digital Scrapbooking is the art of creating a digital scrapbook page using scanned or uploaded photos and various digital effects and embellishments available from an uncountable number of online digital scrapbooking sites.

Here's an example:

1. First, visit the following webpage to discover a little bit more about this digital art.

Create a new PS document, with the following guidelines:

• Width 1250 px / height 850 px / resolution 70 px/inch / RGB 8 bit / bg transparent
• Layer #1 background: Color the background with a gradient of at least 4 colors. (free to choose)
• Layer #2 your name: Type your name with a font of your choice. (Layer style or special effects: drop shadow or outer glow / stroke / gradient overlay (at least 2 colors) / bevel and emboss. (free to apply)
• Layer #3 or as needed: Type your name at least 5 more times in different layers. Use opacity and fill to create a pattern in the background.
• Layer #4 or as needed: Use brushes to decorate your wallpaper. (Remember to use a layer for each drawing)
• Save it as JPEG medium quality.

PS Practices 6 to 8

Practice 6 (1^st part) – Marquee Tools

• Download File #1 and open it directly in Photoshop.



• If the layer is blocked, remove the protection.



• Using the rectangular marquee tool, select the main building of the picture.



• Apply a Deep Emerald Photo Filter with density at 90%.



• Save it as JPEG medium quality.



• Paste it in your PS Portfolio.

Practice 6 (2^nd part) – Polygonal Lasso Tool

• Download File #2 and open it directly in Photoshop.



• If the layer is blocked, remove the protection.



• Crop the image using the crop tool, as shown in the example.



• Using the Polygonal Lasso Tool (feather: 2px), select the background, leaving only the first rock without selection.



• Apply a Gaussian Blur Filter, with radius in 2.0 pixels.



• Save it as JPEG medium quality.



• Paste it in your PS Portfolio.

Practice 6 (3^rd part) – Polygonal Lasso Tool

• Download File #3 and open it directly in Photoshop.



• If the layer is blocked, remove the protection.



• Using the Polygonal Lasso Tool (feather: 2px), select the buildings and copy them. (File-copy)



• Create a New Layer and paste the selection.



• Delete the original layer.



• Create a new layer and using the paint bucket tool, add color to the background. (R:222 – G:235 – B:6) Arrange the layers if necessary, to have the buildings before the background.



• Save it as JPEG medium quality.



• Paste it in your PS Portfolio.

Practice 7 – Vector Mask Layers

• Download File #4 and open it directly in Photoshop.



• If the layer is blocked, remove the protection.



• Add a new Mask Layer.



• Start drawing shapes using the Custom Shape Tools. (it doesn’t have to be exactly as the example)



• Add a new layer, and change the background (R:35 – G:105 – B:40) (Edit-Fill)



• Crop the picture to remove part of the background (look at the example)



• If you have questions, search in pages 59-60 of your PS book.



• Save it as JPEG medium quality.



• Paste it in your PS Portfolio.

Practice 8 – Composite Image

• Download File #5, File #6, File #7, File #8 and File #9.



• Open file #5 directly in Photoshop.



• If the layer is blocked, remove the protection.



• Create a new layer. Convert it to a background layer. (it will turn to white)



• Select the wall layer. Change its opacity to 50% in the layers palette)



• Open file #6 directly in Photoshop.



• Paste it to the original file. (use the move tool and holding down Alt, drag the selection to the composition file. Rename the layer. (ocean)



• For the big picture use these special effects in the layers palette. (drop shadow, opacity 70% - distance 15px – spread 13% - size 13px * stroke, size 4 – color R:74-G:56-B:25)



• For the smaller pictures use these special effects. (drop shadow, opacity 70% - distance 7px – spread 26% - size 13px * stroke, size 3 – color, free to choose)



• For the medium picture use these special effects. (outer glow, opacity 90% - spread 20% - size 30px – color, free to choose)



• If you have questions, search in pages 61-63 of your PS book.



• Save it as JPEG medium quality.



• Paste it in your PS Portfolio.

Image Properties

In your Photoshop Portfolio, using screen prints explain the following:

1. The process to save a file as JPEG.
2. The 3 steps involved in generating files for print.
3. The process to set the resolution of an image to 300 ppi.
4. The process to convert an image to CMYK color mode.
5. Answer: What is softproof?
6. Answer: What is TIFF?
7. The process to save an image with TIFF format.
   

Photoshop Progress Portfolio

The objective from now on is to save all the work that you are and will continue doing with Photoshop. With this you will be able to measure and see your progress and all the things that you can do now.

So let’s begin with it, to start your portfolio follow the instructions below.

• Start a new Word document with the following guidelines:
  

1. Create a personalized background to use as a COVER.
   

• Start a new document in Photoshop (name: background, width 612 points x height 792 points, resolution 30 px/inch, RGB 8 bit color, transparent background) Create a collage of different pictures where you show some things that you like (flowers, colors, music, etc.) Use the magic wand tool and the lasso polygonal tool to remove the unwanted background of the pictures you choose. Save it as JPEG medium quality and place it as the background of your cover.

• The cover must include: full name, ID, grade & section, subject name, and as a title “My Photoshop Portfolio”

2. On the following sheets, you’ll place the result of the 5 practices you’ve done so far. (1-photomontage, 2-adjustment layer, 3-clone stamp tool, 4-red eye tool, 5-healing brush tool)

• As title of each sheet use the name of the practice and include the following:

• Explain the process that needs to be done to use those tools, use screen prints that show the steps of the process. (example: for creating a new file the process is: FileàNewàtype the specifications)

• If is the case, place both before & after pictures.

4th Practice: Using the red eye tool (page 37)

Download a picture with "red eyes". Follow the steps from the book p. 37 to remove this from the picture. Save them as JPEG Medium quality. Send both pictures (before & after).


5th Practice: Healing brush tool (page 36)

Search a picture in Google, that has minor or small imperfections in the face or skin (pimbles, freckles, etc.) Follow the instructiones from the book p. 36 to remove this from the picture. Save them as JPEG Medium quality. Send both pictures (before & after).

Open an image directly into Photoshop, applying the following format:

Use an adjustment layer and change the brightness and contrast

Use another adjustment layer to change the hue and saturation

Save it in JPEG medium quality and send it to the class mail.

Practice #3

Open an image directly into Photoshop, and create a small correction with the clone stamp tool.

Send both images – before and after (JPEG medium quality)

General guidelines: Save all the following practices in PSD format and in JPEG Medium Quality of 30. (read instructions from your book. Page 38)

Practice #1

Create a new file with the following format:

Name: Photomontage

Width: 1200 pixels

Height: 600 pixels

Resolution: 30 pixels/inch

Color mode: RGB 8 bit

Background: transparent

In this file do the following:

Place 3 photos

Photo #1: Place a background.

Photo #2: Place a person. Remove the background using the lasso polygonal tool.

Photo #3: Place a thing. Remove the background using the magic wand tool.
